Mountain's Puzzle

Guess where the kids of Coral Canal are going next!

Maggie Valley, North Carolina!

However, due to Hurricane Helene and the devastating flooding in that region, before we add the locations the children visited, we want to include the links to relief organizations that are helping the people affected there.

  1. The first is WNCWildernessSafety.org This is the Haywood County Search and Rescue Team that provide life-saving assistance to hikers and now to flood victims. The group is highlighted in the story, where you'll even get to meet one of the real-life volunteers!

  2. SamaritansPurse.org

Samaritans Purse has already established relief sites in five critical areas. You can look through their website and see that although they are providing relief to Hurricane Helene victims, they also provide vital aid around the world.

  3. ABCCM.org

This organization is providing relief in the Asheville area.

While the children are visiting, they get to hike. I learned a lot about hiking safety while writing this book. Most of my information came from our friend Craig who volunteers for the Haywood County Search and Rescue, the people we dedicated the book to. But, here are some additional websites that explain hiker safety and building a good fire.

Guess how long this many sticks would burn for? Before Craig educated me about fires I would have said at least 6 hours. But, this many sticks would only burn for half that time, about 3 hours! That's why the kids ran out of firewood!!!

This picture is from one of my favorite hikes: Water Rock Knob:

Sunrise from a Maggie Valley Cabin

Same spot on a different day! Isn't it amazing how the colors change?

Hiking in the mist. Right after this we saw the same creature the kids of Coral Cove were looking for! It just stood up out of the mist. I wish I could put the picture here, but that would ruin the story for those children who still need to solve the riddle :)
